Pollsters often ask questions like:
"Do you think things in this country are generally going in the right direction or are they seriously off on the wrong track?"
The Los Angeles Times and Bloomberg did just that (with this exact question) and 76% percent of those asked said the country was on the wrong track. (8/15-18/2008)
The problem is that hidden in this number is those who think the country is too liberal and those who think the country is too conservative. Both of these groups think the country is on the wrong track. I'm not sure in this election cycle if right track / wrong track polls are useful at all.
