Another Dance with iTunes

2005-12-29 07:24:00
I tried iTunes again, I was curious.  I haven't used it since they originally added Podcasting support.  Well, I still had a horrible experience.  It's awful.  About 50% of the content is repurposed content not originally done as a podcast.  They also mix audio and video together, and refer to both as a podcast.  I still don't like the term "podcast", but that's another story.  Regardless of the automatic download you get with a podcatching client, I still find myself browsing to sites and downloading content manually.  But sometimes I parse the feeds using PHP, so I can get my own simple "right click and download" pages.  Here is an example of 4 feeds I have done this to:
Accelerating Change 2005 - Diggnation - Engadget - Radio Clash

If I was to use a podcatching client I would probably use: Juice (the podcatcher client formally known as iPodder Lemon)
A few benefits of Juice are: 1) Its Free, 2) Its GPL, 3) accessible for blind and visually impaired users and 4) Its primary purpose is to download free podcasts, not as a ploy to try to sell you DRM'd AAC files.

For discovering new content I use:
1) PodNova.com
2) Odeo.com
3) Recommendations (plugs) from other podcasts.

That's it for 2005.  Lots of interesting projects coming up in 2006.
Happy New Year!
Matt
